Base Case
- Wort from the kettle is cooled in a two-section heat exchanger
- Water is preheated in section 1 and is further heated in the hot water tank
- Heating load for hot water production is 500 kW, duty cycle of 100% and operation 2,880 h/yr
- Refrigeration load is 1,000 kW, duty cycle of 100% and operation
2,880 h/yr - Natural gas fired steam boiler seasonal efficiency is 80%
- Refrigeration system seasonal coefficient of performance (seasonal) is 3
- Natural gas rate is $10/GJ, electricity rate is $0.06/kWh
Proposed case
- large temperature difference between the two stream flows in each sections of the cooler is an opportunity to further improve heat recovery
- Increase heat transfer surface area of section 1 to recover more heat from the wort:
- Hot stream: 18 L/s, 2,880 h/yr, 19ºC (representing the additional energy savings)
- Cold stream: 18 L/s, 2,880 h/yr, 10ºC
- Heat recovery efficiency is 45%
- Increasing the heat exchanger size will increase the amount of heat recovered and therefore decrease the heating load, it will also reduce the cooling load since the wort enters section 2 at lower temperature
- Cost of retrofit is $130,000
