Base Case
- Cold water is preheated by a desuperheater and further heated by a natural gas water heater
- Heating load is 2,000 kW, duty cycle of 100% and operation 4,000 h/yr
- Cooling load is 12,000 kW, duty cycle of 100% and operation 4,000 h/yr
- Water heater seasonal efficiency is 90%
- Chillers seasonal coefficient of performance is 3.8
- Natural gas rate is $11/GJ, electricity rate is $0.05/kWh
Proposed case
- Recover additional heat from liquid ammonia (NH3) (1) and compressors oil (2)
- (1) Install ammonia subcooler for water preheating, heat recovered 2,760 MWh, cost of retrofit is $275,000
- (2) Install oil cooler to increase the temperature of the water leaving the desuperheater, heat recovered 3,105 MWh, cost of retrofit is $450,000
- Water heater seasonal efficiency decreased to 87% (water enters the water heater at higher temperature)
- Chillers seasonal coefficient of performance increased to 4.15 due to subcooling
