Energy efficiency measures - Residential - Building envelope - Insulation / Latvia

Case study assignment

Three separate buildings in an apartment complex require retrofit insulation to reduce heat losses during the winter months.

Base case

Heating system
  • Buildings are heated by diesel fuel #2
  • Space heating seasonal efficiency is 80%
  • Fuel cost is €0.308/L
  • Set point temperature for space heating is 20 °C
  • Heating changeover temperature is 15 ºC

Building envelope
  • First apartment building has roof area of 2,900 m² insulated to 1.56 m²-ºC/W
  • Second apartment building has below grade wall area of 8,000 m² insulated to 2.48 m²-ºC/W
  • Third apartment building has below grade wall area of 5,500 m² insulated to 2.48 m²-ºC/W

Proposed case

Building envelope
  • Roof insulation in first apartment is increased to 6.32 m²-ºC/W for €7,000
  • Below grade walls are insulated as follows:
    • second building to 5.15 m²-ºC/W for €11,000
    • third building to 5.15 m²-ºC/W for €10,000
  • Incentive of 25% on energy efficiency measures
Prepare a RETScreen study, documenting any assumptions that you are required to make, and report on the significant conclusions from this analysis.
