Case study assignment

A university campus is contemplating retrofitting 50,000 m² of classroom and office space with more energy efficient lighting.

Base case
  • 40,000 m² classroom space illuminated 12 h/d, 5 d/w at 14 W/m² lighting load
  • 10,000 m² office space illuminated 8 h/d, 5 d/w at 12 W/m² lighting load
  • Electricity rate is $0.10/kWh
Proposed case
  • Reduce classroom lighting load to 7 W/m²
  • Reduce office lighting load to 6 W/m²
  • New lights and better controls reduce the number of hours the lights are on by 10%
  • Incremental cost of lights is $400,000 in the classrooms and $100,000 in the offices
  • New lights have a longer life expectancy resulting in savings in light replacements cost of $4,000 per year in the classrooms and $1,000 per year in the offices
Prepare a RETScreen study, documenting any assumptions that you are required to make, and report on the significant conclusions from this analysis.

Solution

The worked-out solution is the data file selected from within the RETScreen Project Database. The user automatically downloads the Project Database file while downloading the RETScreen software.

Similar project

The University of New Brunswick in Fredericton has completed lighting retrofits in 10 buildings under an existing energy management program. Lighting retrofits included replacement of less efficient incandescent and fluorescent lights with T-8 fluorescent lights with electronic ballast.
