Case study assignment
A university campus is contemplating retrofitting 50,000 m² of classroom and office space with more energy efficient lighting.
Base case
- 40,000 m² classroom space illuminated 12 h/d, 5 d/w at 14 W/m² lighting load
- 10,000 m² office space illuminated 8 h/d, 5 d/w at 12 W/m² lighting load
- Electricity rate is $0.10/kWh
- Reduce classroom lighting load to 7 W/m²
- Reduce office lighting load to 6 W/m²
- New lights and better controls reduce the number of hours the lights are on by 10%
- Incremental cost of lights is $400,000 in the classrooms and $100,000 in the offices
- New lights have a longer life expectancy resulting in savings in light replacements cost of $4,000 per year in the classrooms and $1,000 per year in the offices
