Climate data

The RETScreen Climate Database includes the meteorological data required in the model. While running the software the user may obtain climate data from ground monitoring stations and/or from NASA's global satellite/analysis data. If climate data is not available from a specific ground monitoring station, data is then provided from NASA's satellite/analysis data. The source of the data (i.e. "Ground" or "NASA") is indicated next to the data in the climate database dialogue box.

To access the climate database the user may refer to "Data & help access." Climate data is obtained by making a selection for a specific location from the climate database dialogue box. From the dialogue box, the user selects the Country, then Province/State or n/a, and finally Climate data location. The climate data location usually corresponds to the name of a city/town or airport within the selected country. From the dialogue box the data can be pasted to the cells by clicking on the "Paste Data" button. Data entered using the climate database may be overwritten; i.e. the user may prefer to use other data and can manually enter values into the cells.

The climate data locations are plotted in the Climate Database Map. The red dots represent ground monitoring station data locations and the blue dots represent the NASA global satellite/analysis data locations for populated areas. Combined, these locations represent areas where there are at least 10 inhabitants based on United Nations settlements data (i.e. climate data is provided for locations where most people on earth live). The NASA data within the RETScreen Climate Database is for populated locations on earth. However, it is important to note that the full dataset and maps available from NASA covers the entire surface of the planet, and is available at the NASA Surface meteorology and Solar Energy Data Set website at: http://eosweb.larc.nasa.gov/sse/RETScreen . This additional data can be particularly useful for applications in remote sites (e.g. solar powered telecommunication tower, etc.).
