Energy performance contracts

An energy performance contract is an agreement between an entity (public or private) and an energy services company (ESCO) in which the ESCO undertakes to make the entity's facilities more energy-efficient for compensation that is normally results-based and linked to the amount of energy saved. The agreement, which is often for a period of between 7-10 years, encompasses areas such as conducting an initial energy audit and compiling a list of recommendations; project development, construction, and installation; and the assumption of technical and financial risks.
