Hydrology data
The RETScreen Hydro Project Model can be used for any location in the world. For projects in Canada, the user can use Canadian hydrology data included in the RETScreen Hydrology Database. For other project locations around the world, hydrology data from other sources can be entered directly into the worksheet.
RETScreen Hydrology Database
This database currently includes some of the hydrological data required in the model for projects located in Canada. In addition, maps are also provided to help the user with the analysis. To access the hydrology database the user may refer to "Data and Help Access."
From the dialogue box, the user selects a "Country" (i.e. Canada only for now), then "Province/State" and finally the "Proxy Gauge Name" or instead of Province/State, the user can select "Flow duration curve (FDC) type" and then the user should click on "See maps" to find the appropriate flow duration curve type for the project location (e.g. AA1). The proxy gauge name for the selected flow duration curve type will also display for reference purposes only. From the dialogue box the flow-duration curve data can be pasted to the worksheet by clicking on the "Paste Data" button. Data entered using the hydrology database may be overwritten; i.e. the user may prefer to use other data and can manually enter values into the worksheet.
The following source of hydrological data has been used to calculate the new flow-duration curve dataset found in RETScreen: HYDAT (Hydrological Database) available from Environment Canada. Contact these organisations to purchase hydrological data where more detailed site information is required. Alternatively, for Canadian gauging stations not included in the RETScreen Database, individual datasets for particular stations can also be purchased from Environment Canada's National Water Data Archive.
Flow-duration curve data, that are required to run the model, are available for a large number of streamflow gauging stations. In addition, data might be available from the International Small-Hydro Atlas website which can be accessed via the International Energy Agency's International Small-Hydro Atlas website.
CanmetENERGY is interested in adding hydrological data to the RETScreen Hydrology Database for other regions of the world. Please contact RETScreen International if you have data that you would like added to the database.
