Speaker and Faculty Biographies

Kevin Bourque, Project Engineer,
RETScreen International (Canada)

Kevin Bourque has been part of the RETScreen team since 2004. He specializes in the RETScreen software development, providing RETScreen software technical support, including helping to deliver training seminars and trainer workshops, assisting in the development of the Online distance learning tools such as the e-Textbook and case studies. Prior to joining NRCan, he worked as a wind energy consultant specializing in the assessment, computer modelling and performance analysis of wind energy systems. He has been working in the energy field for the past 10 years. Kevin obtained a Bachelor of Engineering degree (Mining Engineering) from McGill University.
Roland R. Clarke, CEO,
Clarke Energy Associates (Barbados)

Dr. Roland R. Clarke is a seasoned energy engineering and economic analyst with more than 27 years international experience in renewable energy and energy efficiency. He is currently the CEO of Clarke Energy Associates in his native Barbados. His firm provides training and advisory services using RETScreen, in addition to the design, systems integration and supply of solar photovoltaic and wind energy systems. Dr. Clarke holds the Ph.D. in Energy Management and Policy from the University of Pennsylvania, USA, the M.Sc. in Alternative Energy from the University of Reading, UK, and the B.Sc. from the University of the West Indies, Barbados.
Ivor F. da Cunha, Principal,
LeapFrog Energy Technologies Inc. (Canada)

Ivor da Cunha is an independent consultant with LeapFrog Energy Technologies and has over twenty five years of energy efficiency with electricity and natural gas utilities, industrial customers, and international energy agencies. He has led RETScreen workshops across Canada, as well as in China, Singapore, Indonesia, Korea and the Philippines. Mr. da Cunha holds a Bachelor of Fuels and Materials Engineering from the Royal Military College of Canada, and an MBA (Marketing) from Queen’s University at Kingston. He is a licensed member of the Professional Engineers of Ontario and also holds the Certified Measurement and Verification Professional (CMVP) designation.
Stephen Dixon, Principal,
TdS Dixon Inc. (Canada)

Stephen Dixon is a freelance energy consultant. As Principal of TdS Dixon Inc., of St Jacobs, Ontario, he brings a practical, hands-on approach to the challenge of developing the energy management capacities of a broad range of institutional, commercial and industrial organizations. Stephen has accumulated over thirty years of energy management experience, including more than 600 energy audits and the facilitation of over 1000 energy management workshops. Stephen holds an M.A.Sc. in Systems Design Engineering from the University of Waterloo and a B.Sc. in Physics from UPEI.
Jose Etcheverry, Professor,
York University (Canada)

Dr. Jose Etcheverry is assistant professor at the Faculty of Environmental Studies of York University. He conducts research, graduate training and undergraduate teaching on renewable energy and is also the Co-Chair of the Sustainable Energy Initiative (a new partnership between FES, Centennial College and the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority). Dr. Etcheverry received his PhD and MA from the University of Toronto (both theses focused in renewable energy) and is a member of the Chairmen Committee of the World Council for Renewable Energy, the Windfall Ecology Centre, REAP Canada, and he is President of the Canadian Renewable Energy Alliance.
Pedro Paulo da Silva Filho, Director General,
Grupo SAGE (Brazil)

Pedro Paulo da Silva Filho is an electrical engineer with more than 25 years of energy related experience. This includes 9 years with Gerdau Group (Brazilian steel group) and 8 years with Kraftanlagen Heidelberg (energy and environment consultants from Germany) as technical and commercial director of operations in Brazil and 14 years at SAGE as Director General. Additionally, Mr Da Silva has provided energy efficiency and energy management consultancy services for Brazilian and international institutions, such as ELETROBRAS, SENAI, The World Bank, The InterAmerican Development Bank, RETScreen, CIDA, and USAID, having worked in more than 15 countries.
Richard Hellen, CEO,
Hermes Energy Services (United Kingdom)

Richard Hellen is CEO of Hermes Energy Services, a consultancy specialising in sustainable energy feasibility assessment. He has worked in the energy sector for over 30 years, with experience in the nuclear and renewable energy sectors. Richard has a degree in physics and is active in promoting an enterprise based approach to sustainable energy in the United Kingdom. He has trained academics, policy makers and energy professionals both in the UK and elsewhere in the use of RETScreen.
Seamus Hoyne, Managing Director,
Tipperary Energy Agency (Ireland)

Seamus Hoyne has been involved in the energy sector since 1993. Seamus established the Tipperary Energy Agency (TEA) in 1998 on behalf to Tipperary Institute and North and South Tipperary County Councils. Since 2000 he has worked for Tipperary Institute as a Lecturer and he currently manages the TEA on a part-time basis. He was National Secretary of the Irish Bioenergy Association and was Chair of the Association of Irish Energy Agencies. He holds a Degree in Mechanical Engineering and Masters of Engineering Degree from University of Limerick and Masters of Science (Energy Management) from University of Ulster. He is a Chartered Engineer.
Michael Hupel, Regional Sales Manager,
Johnson Controls (Canada)

Mike Hupel is the Regional Sales Manager of Energy & Sustainability for the Northeast Service Region of Johnson Controls Inc. He specialises in promoting and securing energy related projects that may have a finance interface and provides a return on investment based on performance. Mike has been working in the performance contracting field for the past 5 years. A graduate of McMaster University with a Bachelor of Technology degree Mike is also a Certified Energy Manager with the Association of Energy Engineers and holds a LEED Accredited Professional designation.
Sivanappan Kumar, Professor,
Asian Institute of Technology (Thailand)

Dr. Sivanappan Kumar received his B. Eng (Honours) in Mechanical Engineering from Government College of Technology, Coimbatore, India; Master of Engineering (Energy Technology) from Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand; and Ph.D from Institut National Polytechnique de Toulouse, France. He is currently a Professor and coordinator of the Energy field of study at AIT. He was the Dean of the School of Environment, Resources and Development at AIT during 2005 – August 2009. He teaches, carries out research, training, and outreach in the areas of renewable energy resource and technologies, climate change and greenhouse gas mitigation, solar energy, cleaner production, and energy and sustainable development.
Pierre Langlois, President,
Econoler (Canada)

Pierre Langlois is the President of Econoler, an international consulting firm specialised in energy efficiency, performance contracting, renewable energy and carbon financing. He has 25 years of experience in the energy sector and he has been a board member of organizations such as the Efficiency Valuation Organization (EVO). He has worked in over 40 countries as part of mandates led or financed by major multilateral development banks. He has been involved with RETScreen for the last 10 years, has offered training in over 10 countries and has been instrumental in the development of the Certification in the use of RETScreen (CRU).
Gregory J. Leng, Director,
RETScreen International (Canada)

Gregory J. Leng is the creator and Director of the RETScreen Clean Energy Project Analysis Software at Natural Resources Canada’s CanmetENERGY centre in Varennes, Quebec. He specialises in the clean energy market, technology and finance interface and has been working in the renewable energy and energy efficiency fields for the past 25 years. Prior to joining NRCan, Greg was based in Hyderabad, India as the India Country Manager for the International Fund for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency. Greg obtained a Master of Science degree from the University of Massachusetts Lowell in Energy Engineering (Solar Energy Engineering) and a Bachelor of Commerce degree (Marketing and International Business) from McGill University.
Nathalie Meloche, Project Manager,
RETScreen International (Canada)

Nathalie Meloche is a project manager for RETScreen International at Natural Resources Canada’s CanmetENERGY centre in Varennes. She was responsible for managing the preparation of RETScreen Version 4 and was lead author for the biomass heating model in the first release of RETScreen (Version 98). She is currently managing the preparation of the new Performance Analysis module. She specialises in clean energy software development and has been working in the renewable energy and energy efficiency fields for the past 17 years. Nathalie obtained a Bachelor of Applied Sciences degree in chemical engineering at the Ottawa University.
Murray R. Metcalfe, Professor,
University of Toronto (Canada)

Dr. Murray Metcalfe is Professor, Globalization in the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering at the University of Toronto. He holds a B.A.Sc. in Industrial Engineering from the University of Toronto and a M.S. and Ph.D. in Engineering-Economic Systems from Stanford University. He began his professional career at McKinsey & Company, the management consulting firm, and then spent over 20 years in the venture capital industry in the U.S., until returning to academia in 2008. Dr. Metcalfe also serves as a senior advisor in the private equity area at Lee Munder Capital Group, an investment management firm in Boston.
Dinesh S. Parakh, Program Advisor,
RETScreen International (Canada)

Dinesh S. Parakh manages strategic partnerships, training & capacity building, and business development for RETScreen International at Natural Resources Canada’s CanmetENERGY centre in Varennes, Quebec. He is also the lead author of the RETScreen Clean Energy Legal Toolkit. A lawyer in Ontario, Dinesh has 12 years of experience in international development and has worked extensively throughout Africa. He was formerly with the United Nations Development Programme and World Food Programme in South Africa, as well as the Canadian International Development Agency in Ottawa, Canada. Dinesh holds a B.A. with high honours from Yale University, and an M.A. and J.D. from the University of Toronto.
Frederic Pouyot, Director,
Clean Energy Institute (Canada)

Frederic Pouyot has led the development and deployment of clean energy courses that leverage the RETScreen software. Using his extensive background in IT, the Clean Energy Institute has developed a leading platform for web-based distance learning that offer facilitated and self paced courses and certificate programs in Clean Energy Project Feasibility Analysis. Frederic has an undergraduate degree specialized in solar thermal energy applied to housing and construction, from the University of Perpigan. He also graduated from EGC Brive, a school of the French National Network of Business Schools and he obtained a Diploma (Institut des Techniques d'Exportation) from the University of Nice.
Michael M. D. Ross, President,
RER Energy Inc. (Canada)

Michael M. D. Ross has taught RETScreen courses to thousands of people across Canada, in the United States, and in France, and has assisted RETScreen International in the preparation of much of its e-learning course material. Over the past 15 years, he has held research and consulting positions related to renewable energy and energy efficiency in both Canada and Europe. He obtained a Bachelor of Applied Science degree (Systems Design Engineering) from the University of Waterloo.
D. R. St. George, Senior Biosystems Engineer,
Manitoba Hydro (Canada)

Dennis St. George is a Professional Engineer with Manitoba Hydro where he leads the Biosystems Engineering Section; a group responsible for delivering technical and business solutions to customers with biologically based processes, applications and issues. Renewable energy is one of Dennis’s key areas of expertise. He completed a Masters degree related to solar energy and has 25 years experience in the transportation and utility sectors. Dennis is a Certified Measurement & Verification Professional; a designation which permits him to offer valuation and verification of energy efficiency and renewable energy investments. He is also a Distributed Generation Certified Professional.
Farah Sheriff, Project Engineer,

Farah Sheriff is part of the development team of the RETScreen Clean Energy Project Analysis Software at Natural Resources Canada’s CanmetENERGY centre in Varennes, Quebec. She is responsible for preparing technical documentation and provides technical support for software integration. She has been working in the renewable energy and energy efficiency fields for the past 10 years. Farah obtained a Bachelor of Applied Science in Electrical Engineering from Université de Sherbrooke and a Master of Applied Science in Mechanical Engineering (specialization in geothermal well fields modeling) from École Polytechnique de Montréal.
Paul W. Stackhouse, Jr., Senior Research Scientist,
NASA Langley Research Center (USA)

Dr. Paul Stackhouse is a Senior Research Scientist at the NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia. He received his B.S. in Physics and Atmospheric Science from Drexel University and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences at Colorado State University. Dr. Stackhouse is lead scientist of the NASA/Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment Surface Radiation Budget Project, and he leads several NASA-funded Applied Science projects that tailor satellite data parameters, along with meteorological input, for the energy-related and agricultural industries. These projects, along with long standing partnerships including RETScreen, have led to internet applications for distributing these data to the clean energy industry.
Laura Tozer, Program Manager,
Community Energy Partnerships Program, (Canada)

Laura Tozer has an MA degree focused on community based renewable energy from the University of Toronto and a BSc in Environmental Sciences from the University of Guelph. She has significant knowledge of renewable energy technology and the energy sector as well as extensive experience researching renewable energy, social friction in wind power development, and community renewable energy. Before joining the Community Energy Partnerships Program, Laura worked as a researcher for a leading climate change adaptation and vulnerability research group at the University of Guelph.
Neil Veilleux, Consultant,
Meister Consultants Group (USA)

Neil Veilleux leads renewable heating initiatives at Meister Consultants Group, in Boston. He advised Massachusetts regulators on the state's solar thermal incentives and was a lead author of New York City's Long-term Solar Strategy and Community Solar program design. With the City of Boston, and others, Mr. Veilleux trained professionals to assess the feasibility of clean energy projects using RETScreen. Previously, he served as a Rappaport Public Policy Fellow at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government and was a Fulbright scholar in Germany. He earned a M.A. in Urban and Environmental Policy & Planning from Tufts University and a B.A. from The University of the South.
Urban T. Ziegler, Chief Engineer,

Urban T. Ziegler is Chief Engineer of the RETScreen Clean Energy Project Analysis Software at Natural Resources Canada’s CanmetENERGY centre in Varennes, Quebec. He has been working world wide in the renewable energy and energy conservation fields for the past 32 years. Urban’s areas of expertise include monitoring, energy efficiency, district energy, co-generation, biomass energy systems, financing and risk analysis. Urban obtained a Master of Science degree from Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden in Civil and Structural Engineering.
