Empowering Cleaner Energy Decisions
Power - Wind turbine - 1 kW - Off-grid

Template assignment

Base case
  • A 7 kW diesel-powered electric generator runs for around an hour per day
  • The generator supplies some loads directly, but mainly charges a battery bank
  • AC loads are met by the battery bank through an inverter when generator is off
  • Diesel fuel rate is $1.00/L
  • The generator’s heat rate is 18,000 kJ/kWh
  • Maintenance of the diesel generator costs around $300 per year
  • Average AC load is 4 kWh/day and average DC load is 1 kWh/day
  • The annual peak load is 7 kW
Proposed case
  • A wind turbine is added to the base case diesel generator/battery system. The diesel generator runs only when the wind turbine is unable to keep the batteries fully charged.
  • Batteries and inverter are the same as in the base case
  • The proposed wind turbine production data are as follows:

  • The proposed turbine has a swept area of 5.7 m2 and a rotor diameter 2.7 m
  • Wind speeds at a 20 m height are estimated to average 6.0 m/s from November through March, 4.0 m/s in June through August, and 5.0 m/s in the remaining months
  • Wind shear exponent is 0.15, annual air temperature and atmospheric pressure are the same as the one measured at nearest climate data location
  • The turbine costs $3,500; a 20 m guyed tower costs $1,000; the homeowner will do most of the installation, such that additional costs will be only $1,000
  • Maintenance costs for the turbine are expected to average $300 per year
