Combined heating & cooling - Heat pump - Air-source - House

Template assignment

Base case
  • Heated and cooled floor area for building is 150 m2
  • Heating exclusively by oil furnace with efficiency of 75%
  • Cooling fuel type is electricity
  • Heating load for building is 60 W/m2
  • Cooling load for building is 35 W/m2
  • Air conditioners have a seasonal COP of 3.0
  • Heating oil #2 (diesel) rate is $0.85/L; electricity rate is $0.07/kWh
Proposed case
  • Dual source heating: air-source heat pump and oil furnace, resulting in a lower electricity tariff
  • Better controls included with the new system results in a 10% energy saving for both heating and cooling
  • Central cooling by air-source heat pump with seasonal COP of 4.0
  • A 2 ton (7 kW) air-source heat pump costs $4,200 installed
  • Heat pump heating capacity is 3.2 kW
  • Air-source heat pump seasonal COP of 2.0 for heating
  • Base load heating is provided by the heat pump, and electricity rate is $0.05/kWh
  • Peak load heating is provided by the oil furnace
  • As a first approximation, one can assume that around 20% of the annual heating is provided by the furnace
  • Operation and maintenance costs essentially the same as in base case
